I don’t know if you all have heard about this Worldwide WordPress 5k but I thought I would give it a go. The dates were Monday, September 19th thru Sunday, September 25th. From what I understand the only rule is to run, walk or a combination of both 3.1 miles. It could be done inside, outside, wherever you want. You could do it in the AM, PM or the middle of the day. Just as long as you did it!
I knew I would have 4 miles on September 24th because I had a race that day. But it would almost be cheating to count that race as my WordPress race too, right? So, I must put in an additional 3.1 miles on another day.
I thought I would make it a fun little 7 day challenge and run 3.1 miles each day that week. Of course when I say run, it’s about 50/50 running and walking. But still, if I were to follow through with this, what a feat it will be!
“Feat” – What made me use this word? I don’t think I have ever used this word before. It felt right and so I did. It works though. Ok, moving on. lol
There is something I have been wanting to do for quite some time now. Here in KC we have a downtown airport. I drive by this airport just about every day going back and forth to work. There are usually people walking, running and/or biking along the side road that goes in front of the airport. I will sometimes even see people go up and around even behind the airport. I’ve often wondered where they are going. I recently found out that you can run around the back side and back around to the front. Round trip is 2.73 miles and it’s been on my bucket list for quite some time now. =)
All of this sounds great, right?
Well last week didn’t happen quite as I had hoped. I found out Monday that a friend of the family was very ill and wouldn’t live more than a week or two. I then learned Wednesday that he had died. Needless to say it was a rough week.
However, I did manage to get my 3.1 miles in 3 days that week.
I am very fortunate to have a gym at my work place. I go through periods where I will walk over my lunch. Sometimes inside and sometimes outside. Walking outside is my favorite but if I walk inside I can read my book while doing so. Decisions. Decisions.
Anyways, I was trying to finish my book prior to Wednesday and thought I would walk inside over my lunch. I managed to get 2.2 miles in. Yes!
Later that night I went to the gym with the intention of running my 3.1 miles for the WordPress 5K. However, I waited until around 9:30 to do so. As I was running, 3.1 miles seemed to get longer and longer. I gave up after a mile. But hey, 2.2 + 1 = 3.2!
It may have been cheating just a smidge but I got it in.
This day I actually got my 3.1 miles in and all at once. Woohoo! Now I’m not a fan of running on the treadmill. I don’t know what it is but I feel I run slower on a treadmill than I do outside. I’m not a fast runner to begin with. If you have seen my times and paces on previous races you know this. But treadmills slow me down even more.
Having said that I was very happy to finish 3.1 miles in 40 minutes 58 seconds. Very happy!
I had hoped that as the week went on I would be able to shave a minute or so off of this time. But…that didn’t happen.
Wednesday – Friday
Wednesday was when I learned of his death. Thursday was pretty rough, obviously so. Friday was the visitation.
Saturday morning was the last race of my KC Sweet 16 series. This was a 4 mile race. I finished in 56 minutes 38 seconds. Not my best time but it was 3.1 miles PLUS! =)
This was the day I was planning on running around the downtown airport. I had completely forgotten about the Broadway Bridge Run being in the morning. Part of the route for the half marathon goes around the airport. Therefore the whole area was closed Sunday morning. It then sprinkled on and off the remainder of the day.
I really should have gone to the gym to get one more round of 3.1 miles in. Instead I went to Jazz Louisiana Kitchen and had me some Chicken a la Mer and a Cajun Bloody Mary.
Even though I didn’t do as I set out for last week I find it to still be successful. I was able to get over 10 miles of exercise in. this is 6 more than I would have gotten had I not heard of the Worldwide WordPress 5K.
I’ll take it!
